His Personality
One's first impression of Sorata would be that he is a very optimistic, happy-go-lucky person. He always looks on the brighter side of things and thinks of solutions to problems with a clear, rational mind when they appear. He is confident in his powers and firm in his goal to protect Kamui and fight to save the Earth. He is always the person to lighten a dark mood by inserting a joke of sorts and always there to cheer someone up, should they need it.
The first time we meet Sorata is outside of the Monou house. He is trying to make contact with Kamui but just misses him. While sitting atop a roof, he sees a man nonchalantly standing on top of a telephone pole. Even when he finds out that the man is a member of the Chi no Ryu, Sorata fights him in a very light-hearted manner, making jokes and light banter along the way.
After Subaru gets injured in a fight with Fuuma, Kamui feels responsible and doesn't want to eat, Sorata was the one to cheer him up. Not only does he offer support for Kamui, he offers advice and encouragement. Sorata isn't an idealist; he is very much a realist. However, he doesn't get bogged down with small details and accepts reality as it is, and finds a way around it.
His Powers
Sorata is one of the strongest members of the Ten no Ryuu. When fighting, he mainly uses his ability to control lightning/electricity. Sometimes he forms it into balls of energy and sends them towards his opponents or just call a huge bolt of lightning that can obliterate things on a larger scale. He usually summons lightning with a chant of some sort.
Other than having great fighting ability, Sorata is also one of the most powerful monks Mt. Kouya has ever raised. He is said to even surpass the abilities of the founder of the monastery, who until now was unmatched. In X, Sorata uses several of his abilities. When Kamui wanted to talk within a secure barrier, Sorata put one up that even Hinoto or other dreamseers couldn't peek into. He also, at the request of Kamui, put a tracing Shikigami on a fuda that Hinoto used. This was undetected by her. When Sorata first met Arashi, he put a Gouhou Douji spell on her, that when she is in danger, the doll would protect her if he weren't there.
His Past
Many, if not most, of the those who are involved with the "destined" day have had very rough pasts. Sorata had a very fortunate childhood as he was brought up at Mt. Kouya. However, when he was taken from his parents to be a monk, he was only three. He recounts that he could never forget the tears on his mother's face when he left with the monks. That's why, he says, he can't stand a woman's tears.
As he grew up at the monastery, Sorata was a very mischievous boy. He would always be hungry and steal food from the cupboards, thus angering the others. He would always sneak off during training to play in the mountains. But despite all his mischief, Sorata grew up to be a very principled and decent person. He was told his fate by the elder at the monastery since he was very young, that he would protect Kamui with his life but die for a woman. Despite learning about how he would die, Sorata remained cheerful and kind-hearted. He never once held a grudge against the elder or complained about his fate.
His Duty
As one of the Ten no Ryu, Sorata is destined to fight against the Chi no Ryu and help Kamui save the Earth. His family was told this when he was very young and was taken to Mt. Kouya to train in preparation for this day. The elder at the monastery was someone who used the movement of the stars to tell the future. He told Sorata of his fate and directed him to go to Tokyo when the time came.
His Destiny
Since Sorata was a young child, the elder at Mt. Kouya told him of his fate. Even though he was to be a member of the Ten no Ryu and protect Kamui, Sorata would die for a woman. Knowing this, Sorata decided that if he were to die for a woman, she would be a beautiful one and he would fall in love with her. And that girl was Arashi.
